Baby and Toddler Recipe ideas

You will save a lot of money if you choose to make your baby's food, instead of buying bottled baby food.

Points to remember:

  • Do not add salt, sugar, oil or butter to baby's food;
  • Avoid whole egg, milk and peanuts in baby' first year and
  • Introduce new tastes and food gradually.

    For example:

    • Start with rice cereal or maize porridge once a day for several weeks or until your baby is about 5 months old.
    • Now at lunch time introduce a vegetable like pureed butternut and after about a week introduce another vegetable (perhaps carrots, squash or baby marrows) and after another week another flavour and so on.
    • After about a month, introduce a third meal of pureed fruit (mashed banana, cooked pear or mashed pawpaw)
  • By 6 - 8 months your baby should be able to eat a combination of vegetables
  • Add fish, meat and chicken from about 8 - 9 months and dairy from about 10 months.
